Man, it's hot out there! During Summer, I'm pretty fussy about where and when to shoot. Because I mainly photograph people, I do not want them to sweat, have red skin, or generally be uncomfortable. Do you know why? You do because you are intelligent people! But just in case you are unsure, I have created a list of fantastic places to shoot your portrait or your campaign during the summer months in Sydney.

  1. In a park

I enjoy shooting in the park, it feels free, and I find my clients feel very comfortable in open spaces. Must it be something about the fresh air? It's always an attractive option, the light is lovely, and there are always so many options. I believe in providing clients with options to choose from; I mean, I'm in the service industry, so I need to service my clients. One client Platinum Pacific Partners have only ever shot their corporate headshots in Centennial Park. They figured it was the best way of standing out from the crowd. So we have been shooting in the park for over five years now.

2.     Near the water

In Sydney, we have so many beautiful places by the water. But, of course, the beach or the harbour is always a winner; provided it is either early or late in the day, the light will be gorgeous. Plus, you are guaranteed to get a light wind in your hair, which is excellent for people with long hair.

During summer, if you are shooting on location, you may need to do hair and makeup or have lots of outfits to shoot. However, if you have the budget for location service, your shoot will be less painful.

Otherwise, I would suggest the below options for you:

3.     Your office or home

I LOVE shooting in someone's home or office space. I have been shooting at SJB's office forever. There are always many setup options, plus people can work while you set up. I have found that many clients feel comfortable in a space they know well. Client's often don't think of these spaces as they think it's messy or unattractive, but I can always find a suitable spot for a portrait.

4.     A studio

I believe that I can set up a studio anywhere, which is true. But if you are shooting a campaign with lots of different products, it may be your only option. There is air conditioning, lots of space to hang clothes or products and space for hair and makeup, tea and coffee when you want it. There are so many great studios all over Sydney now. All of them have many different options; some only have white walls. I prefer the ones with lots of options to sit on as I love to have props for posing. It gives a shoot variety, and as I've said before, I will say again, and again photographers are in the service industry.

So next time you need to shoot in summer, don't be a hot, sweaty mess and shoot at midday in the park or by the water. Instead, shoot early in the morning or late in the afternoon to capture some great light or shoot in a space that is familiar to you, so you feel comfortable in your surroundings. That way, you or your product will look its best, and that's the ultimate aim of the shoot!
