How to Love Your Photos: Top Tips for Women in Their 40s and Beyond
If you're a woman in your 40s or above who dreads taking your photo, I have some good news. Having been a photographer for over 20 years, I've been there, too. Believe it or not, I hated being in front of the camera, but I decided it was time to change that a few years ago.
Having worked with top models, actors, and photographers over the years, I've picked up some incredible tips that have helped me and countless others feel confident and beautiful in photos. So, I'm excited to share my top five tips to ensure you love how you look in every portrait.
1. Mindset: Embrace Your Unique Beauty
First things first: mindset is everything. I can’t stress this enough!
Celebrate Yourself: Each of us has our unique beauty. Start seeing your individuality as something to celebrate rather than hide.
Speak Kindly to Yourself: It’s easy to focus on what we don’t like, but try shifting your perspective to appreciate what makes you unique. Your smile, your eyes, the way you laugh – these are your trademarks.
Confidence Shines Through: Before your session, take a moment to remind yourself of your strengths and achievements. Confidence radiates in photos; it all starts with how you see yourself.
Enjoy the Process: Focus on enjoying the experience. When you’re relaxed and happy, it naturally shows in your photos.
2. Styling: Discover What Makes You Shine
Styling can make a huge difference in how you feel and look in your photos.
Choose Flattering Outfits: Pick clothes that make you feel comfortable and highlight your best features. Avoid anything too tight or too loose. Think of something that makes you feel confident and empowered.
Colour Matters: Wear colours that flatter your skin tone and eyes. Solid colours work best, as they keep the focus on you rather than distracting patterns. Download my handy guide here.
Keep Accessories Simple: Opt for accessories that enhance your look without overpowering it. A statement piece can be great, but make sure it doesn't steal the show.
Groom with Care: A little grooming can go a long way. Feeling polished can boost your confidence, whether it's a fresh haircut or a touch of makeup. But get a haircut on a different day than your photo; it always looks better a few days after.
3. Lighting: Your Best Friend
Lighting can make or break a photo.
Embrace Natural Light: Natural light is incredibly flattering. But make sure you stick to the shade.
Avoid Harsh Shadows: Direct sunlight can create unflattering shadows. Opt for diffused light to ensure even illumination of your face.
Studio Lighting: Make sure your photographer has lights. If you're indoors, softbox or ring lights can mimic the beauty of natural light, giving you a soft, even glow.
Experiment with Angles: Play around with how the light hits your face. Side lighting can add depth, while front lighting tends to soften and flatter.
4. Posing: Find Your Best Angles
Posing can initially feel awkward, but a few tips can help you find your comfort zone.
Relax and Breathe: Tension is visible in photos. Take deep breaths and try to move naturally. The more relaxed you are, the better the results.
Mirror Practice: Spend time in front of a mirror to discover your best angles and expressions. This will help you feel more prepared and confident during your shoot.
Subtle Movements: Small adjustments can make a big difference. A slight head turn or weight shift can highlight your best features.
Engage Your Eyes: Your eyes tell a story. Think of something that makes you happy or confident to bring a spark to your gaze.
5. Connection: Trust Your Photographer
Building a connection with your photographer can transform your photo session.
Communicate Your Preferences: Let your photographer know what you love and what makes you nervous. This helps them understand how to make you feel comfortable and look your best.
Build Rapport: Before the shoot, take a few minutes to chat and get to know each other. A good connection makes for more relaxed and natural photos.
Trust the Process: Remember, your photographer's job is to capture you at your best. Trust their expertise and enjoy the journey. But make sure you like the photos before the photographer leaves! They are a service to you; you are the client and must be happy. Don't be afraid to speak up!
Bonus Tip: Celebrate Your Journey
A portrait is more than just a photo—it's a celebration of who you are now. Focusing on these elements can turn the dreaded photo session into a fun and empowering experience. Remember, you deserve to love the way you look in photos. Let's make it happen together!
