30-Minute Portrait Sessions: Capturing Quality in Less Time

Susie Kim and I enjoyed creating various portraits at Reddie’s Showroom.

As a photographer, I understand the importance of time, efficiency, and quality. Recently, I held a "30-minute Portrait Shoot Day" at Reddie, a fantastic showroom designed like a home with white walls and diverse furniture pieces. This setting allowed me to offer 30-minute portrait sessions that catered to clients seeking high-quality portraits on a lower budget. But why 30 minutes? You might wonder if such a short time frame is enough to create diverse and meaningful portraits. Here's why I believe it is.

The Power of Preparation

Preparation is critical to making the most out of a 30-minute session. Before the shoot, I discuss the client's goals and any specific looks they want to achieve. This pre-session planning ensures we hit the ground running. Knowing precisely what we aim to accomplish allows us to maximise every minute of the shoot.

Versatility of the Space

Reddie provides an ideal setting for these sessions. The showroom is shut to the public on Sunday, so we have it all to ourselves. Like a beautifully curated home, the showroom's design offers various backdrops and settings in one location. With white walls and an array of furniture, I can quickly transition between different setups without moving to a new location. This versatility means I can capture various portraits, from casual and relaxed to formal and elegant, all within the same session.

This is Pip Drysdale. She booked a two-hour shoot at her home, which was great, too. This is always an option, but it’s more expensive.

Efficient Workflow

There's no time to waste in a 30-minute shoot. My workflow is streamlined to ensure we cover as much ground as possible. I have my camera connected to my computer so the client can see what's being shot in real-time. This includes setting up equipment in advance, clearly knowing where I will shoot, and guiding clients through poses efficiently. The focused nature of a short session often brings out the best in clients, as they stay engaged and energised throughout the shoot.

Quality Over Quantity

A shorter session means something other than compromising on quality. The condensed timeframe encourages me and the subject to focus on creating a few standout images rather than a large number of average ones. Each shot is deliberate, ensuring the final selection consists of high-quality portraits capturing the subject's essence.

The Client Experience

For many clients, a 30-minute session is appealing because it fits easily into their busy schedules. They do not need to set aside two hours for a photoshoot. They can come in, enjoy a fun and efficient session, and leave with a set of beautiful portraits without feeling fatigued or overwhelmed.

A 30-minute portrait session at Reddie perfectly balances efficiency, variety, and quality. I can create diverse portraits that meet clients' needs and expectations by leveraging the versatile space and a well-prepared approach. Whether you're looking for a professional headshot, a casual lifestyle portrait, or something in between, a short session can deliver stunning results.
