Why It's Important to Have Good Self-Esteem Before Having Your Portrait Taken
In August 2020, post-COVID lockdowns, I hired a photographer to come and take photos of me and my family at our home. I wasn’t feeling at my best, just like everyone else! I had put on weight, and I felt uncomfortable in my skin. But I put on a brave face to capture my sweet family then. I loved the photos when the photographer came to my home; she captured the kids in their element and us enjoying time together. But I see myself, and they see the worst of me. It turns out that I had developed Hashimoto's, hence the weight gain!
During the past year, I have had so many people reach out to me about how they feel in front of the camera. It’s sad to hear other people's stories like mine. And why do they never go in front of the camera? Because of low self-esteem! Unfortunately, in today's world, it has become more critical than ever to have healthy self-esteem when having your portrait taken. I want to examine how self-esteem can affect your feelings in front of the camera.
1. Self-esteem and Self-Perception
Self-esteem is closely linked to how you perceive yourself. You are more likely to view yourself positively when you have healthy self-esteem. This positive self-perception will shine through in your portraits. People with good self-esteem tend to appear more confident and at ease in front of the camera. Their genuine smiles and relaxed posture can make all the difference in the final image. So, when this photographer came to my house, I faked my self-esteem because I did not want to waste the opportunity.
2. Authenticity and Confidence
Good self-esteem empowers you to be yourself. I know this is so hard, but when you accept and love who you are, your portraits will radiate authenticity and confidence. Authenticity is a quality that resonates with viewers because it is relatable and real. A self-confident individual is more likely to connect with the camera and, by extension, with the audience viewing the portrait.
3. Less Reliance on Filters and Editing
If you know me well enough, you know I don’t edit or do filters. I like to look natural in my images. But in a world where photo editing and filters have become the norm, self-esteem plays a pivotal role in reducing the need for heavy editing. Feeling good about yourself makes you less likely to rely on filters and editing to enhance your appearance. Portraits with minimal post-processing often look more natural and genuine, reflecting the real you.
4. Emotional Well-Being
I see it when I work with my clients; the ones who feel comfortable in their skin are the ones who look best in their photos. Good self-esteem can also significantly impact your emotional well-being during a portrait session. A positive self-image can reduce anxiety and nervousness, allowing you to enjoy the experience more fully. This relaxed state of mind often results in better and more appealing photographs. In contrast, individuals with low self-esteem might feel self-conscious and tense, negatively affecting the outcome.
5. Empowerment Through Self-Expression
Portraits are a form of self-expression. They allow you to showcase your personality, interests, and emotions. When your self-esteem is high, you are more likely to embrace the opportunity to express yourself in front of the camera. You can experiment with different poses, expressions, and styles, creating more creative and satisfying portrait sessions. I always say to keep moving if you want a great photo; if you have low self-esteem, you tend not to move and, therefore, won’t get a good picture!
6. Positive Feedback Loop
Having your portrait taken can be a self-esteem booster. Seeing the results and realising how beautiful or handsome you look can reinforce positive self-esteem. This positive feedback loop can extend into other aspects of your life, further enhancing your self-worth. I’m always telling people how fabulous they look during my sessions.
