Why Authenticity is Vital in your Portraits, especially if you are selling yourself!
Portraits are more than just images; they're snapshots of moments frozen in time, encapsulating emotions, memories, and significance. Authenticity – it's the heartbeat of every remarkable portrait, infusing it with a soul-stirring essence that transcends mere likeness. But what exactly makes authenticity so pivotal in the realm of portraiture?
Defining Authenticity in Portraits
I have always preferred a "real" person portrait over a plastic-looking doll. One of the many reasons I love photography so much is for the people. I crave seeing people for who they indeed are, not some fantasy they think they need to show the world. When we talk about authenticity in portraits, we're delving into more than just capturing a person's physical appearance. It's about immortalising their unique personality, emotions, and character on canvas or film. An authentic portrait doesn't just mirror what someone looks like; it's a window into who they are.
Honouring Vulnerability
When I started as a photographer, I was commissioned to photograph Sia. I photographed her in daylight in a restaurant, and she hated how I took the photos. They appeared in the magazine I was commissioned to shoot for, but not long after they appeared there, she sent me a cease and desist. Those beautiful images, raw and unadulterated, are gone forever because they showed her as her and no one else. To capture authenticity requires a willingness to embrace vulnerability – both from the subject and the artist. It's about creating a safe space for self-expression, where individuals feel empowered to reveal their true selves without fear of judgment. Authentic portraits honour this vulnerability, treating each subject with empathy, respect, and compassion.
Expressing Individuality
It's sad to say, but I have been forced to delete whole shots of a few people in my time because there is no magic in my images. It's how I see the person; the camera doesn't lie, and I won’t. I love seeing the subtle nuances – a crooked smile, a furrowed brow, or a twinkle in the eye – breathe life into the portrait, capturing the essence of individuality and beauty.
Connecting with the customer
So, when was the last time you let your authenticity shine through in your portraits? When was the last time you posted an atheistic portrait? As a business owner, it doesn't matter if you sell a product or yourself. It would help if you had authentic recent portraits of yourself. How else do you expect your potential customers to connect with you and your product? The magic of authenticity lies in its ability to forge a deep connection between the subject and the viewer.
Fostering Empathy and Understanding
At its core, authenticity in portraiture fosters empathy and understanding by inviting viewers to step into the subject's shoes. Authentic portraits bridge the gap between different perspectives, cultures, and lived experiences by capturing moments of vulnerability, joy, and resilience. They remind us of our shared humanity, fostering a sense of connection and empathy that transcends barriers. What a way to connect with your customer by being open, honest, and present in your portrait.
So, how do you show up authentically in your next portrait session?
Focus on being yourself and feeling comfortable. Choose a photographer you connect with, and wear clothes that reflect your style. Relax, have fun, and let your genuine emotions shine through. Embrace imperfections and be present in the moment. You'll capture authentic and beautiful photos by staying true to yourself and enjoying the experience.
In a world that often prizes superficiality over substance, authenticity in portraiture serves as a poignant reminder of the beauty and complexity of the human experience. As artists and viewers, let us strive to celebrate authenticity in all its forms, honouring the rich diversity of human expression and identity. For in the authenticity of a portrait lies the unrivalled beauty of the human soul, waiting to be unveiled and celebrated for generations to come.
